Whether passed down in handwritten recipes or shared around a steaming pot, our meals carry stories. This Heritage Month, we want to celebrate the flavours that connect us to where we come from – and each other.
The Flavours We Grew Up With
From seven colours on a Sunday to a warm plate of Tomato Bredie, food has always played a central role in how we gather, share, and remember.
The Food Sock flavours weren’t chosen from a trend list or a focus group. They were chosen because some flavours just take us home – and ours certainly do. From Breyani to Mac n’ Cheese – these are the meals many of us were raised on – the ones we remember from Sunday pots, school lunch boxes, or simple weeknight dinners.
We’ve included dishes like Chakalaka Samp & Beans, Mutton Stew, and Traditional Melkkos because they reflect the heart of South African heritage – rich in flavour, shaped by culture, and full of feeling. They’re meals we grew up with. Meals you might’ve grown up with too. And even if your version was a little different – spicier, chunkier, meatier, or made with a secret family flair – we value that.
These meals are on our shelves to bring that taste of tradition to every home, in a way that’s affordable, quick, and still packed with all the flavours that feel familiar. And we’ll continue striving to bring your favourite family dishes to your table – meals that feel like home, no matter where you are.
We Aim to Keep Traditions Alive With the Taste of Home
Our Food Socks aren’t made to replace tradition, but to help keep it going.
We know that recipes weren’t always written down – they were taught, from mother to daughter, gogo to grandchild, uncle to nephew. Each family had their own signature. No two pots of stew were ever the same, and that’s the beauty.
Even today, when time is tight and energy is low, we believe busy South Africans still deserve to eat what they grew up on – warm, familiar meals that feel like home. That’s why we encourage our community to make Food Socks their own. Add your favourite spices, toss in a handful or two of butternut, or pour in a dash of chutney. However you like to do it – do it your way. Even if you’re cooking quicker, you’re still carrying culture.
Why Traditional Meals Matter
Food is Memory
Meals remind us of home, of holidays and family gatherings, of moments around the table that linger in our memories. There’s comfort in the familiar, especially when life feels uncertain and everything seems to be changing. Food has a way of unlocking memory like nothing else can.
Food is Identity
Our kitchens carry culture. Spices, stews, grains – each ingredient tells a story of who we are and where we come from. Every dish reminds us of the kitchens we grew up in, the smells that filled the house, and the people who stirred the pot before us.
Food is Unity
No matter what language we speak or what background we come from – food brings us together. Pap and stew in one home, curry and roti in another – tables are meant to be shared. Heritage lives in the meals we make, and in the people we share them with.
Celebrate the Season With a Shared Meal
Food brings us together, and Heritage Month is the perfect excuse to reconnect over a warm plate. This month, we challenge you to cook one of your favourite traditional meals. It doesn’t have to be fancy – just full of heart. Invite someone over – a neighbour, a friend, your child, your gogo. Tell stories, pass down what you know, ask questions, and share in a memory.
From Our Kitchen to Yours
However you choose to celebrate your Heritage Month, may your table be full, your memories warm and your meals rich with meaning. And if a Food Sock can make it easier to serve a little tradition with your love, then we’re honoured to be part of your kitchen, and a small part of your tradition.
Tag us in your kitchen moments – from food prep to full plates. We love seeing traditions continuing and evolving.
