Our Approach

Our approach is twofold: addressing immediate needs while fostering long-term sustainability. We achieve this through:

High-Quality Meal Solutions: Each Food Sock we produce can feed 4 to 6 adults:  nutrient-rich, easy-to-prepare meals that cater to the diverse dietary needs of our communities.

Empowering Entrepreneurs: Through our Reseller Program, we mentor and support entrepreneurs, equipping them with the skills and resources needed to succeed.

Our Expansion

The success of Food Sock Meals in South Africa is just the beginning. We are actively exploring opportunities to replicate our model in other regions, adapting to local contexts to tackle food insecurity on a global scale.

Carl van Blerk

Founder and MD

Established in 2021

The Garden Route, Klein Karoo and Central Karoo regions are of the poorest in the Western Cape, suffering intense hunger, unemployment and malnutrition.

For over a decade, it has been the vision of George resident, Carl van Blerk, to establish a food bank to address the severe shortages of nutritional foods to the most vulnerable.  The challenges of starting such a facility, such as financial support and food resources, were prohibitive.

When COVID19 hit the region, Carl and the team from the Eden Lions Club, which he founded in 2009, were requested by local government to support the efforts of providing food to the local community.  This was the spark that re-ignited the fire to start a permanent food bank.  In January 2021, the Garden Route Food Pantry was officially opened.

Towards mid 2022, Carl recognised an alarming trend of a vast number of families, not just in the Garden Route region, but countrywide, who are finding themselves moving further and further into poverty.  These were not just the traditional poverty regions, but the typical middle-class resident.

The need for an affordable, convenient and nutritional meal was proving to be essential.

This need, sparked the idea for Carl to develop the Food Sock.

With valuable assistance from Master Chef Francois Ferreira as well as celebrity Chef and entertainer, Nataniël, a quality product has been developed.

Now available in 8 different flavours, the Food Sock is ideally positioned to suit all – from the financially affected, to the elderly, students, campers and even the wealthy.

Under the banner of the non-profit company, Eden Community Hope Outreach NPC, meals are provided to the poorest in our communities.  Financial donations are encouraged for this purpose – a family of 4 can be given a meal every day of the week, for a month, for only R1000  month.  ($50 US Dollars)
